1. Do I need a user
name and password to access MySQL? The ArticleBot MySQL database is named "myterms1". The user name and
password for the myterms1 database are both null strings. You do not need to
have a MySQL user name and password set up to run ArticleBot. To see your current
MySQL default user name and password, go to the Traffic Light icon 2. Why won't ArticleBot
Connect to MySQL? There are several things that can prevent ArticleBot from connection to MySQL. By far the most common is not installing the programs ArticleBot and MySQL in their respective default directories. MySQL must be installed in C:\mysql\ and ArticleBot must be installed in C:\Program Files\ArticleBot\. If the programs are not installed in their default directories, remove MySQL and ArticleBot from you computer and install them in the default directories now. These are installation steps B and C. This will solve nearly all connection problems. For instructions on removing ArticleBot and MySQL from your computer go to http://www.articlebot.com/members/install/articlebot-uninstall.php. When reinstalling, be sure to carefully follow the step by step illustrated instruction at these pages: Installation Page. http://www.articlebot.com/members/install/ Installation Step A (.Net Framework) instructions.http://www.articlebot.com/members/install/step-A-details.htm Installation Step B (MySQL) instructions. http://www.articlebot.com/members/install/step-B-details.htm Installation Step C (ArticleBot) instructions. http://www.articlebot.com/members/install/step-C-details.htm If ArticleBot will still not connect to MySQL you can follow the steps below find the problem. Once you have the installation files downloaded, you will find it is generally quicker to simply rerun the installation steps B and C. The steps below simple take you through some of the steps that are automated in the installation routines. Is the Database on your computer?
In this example there are three databases in your MySQL server; mysql, myterms1 and test. The myterms1 database belongs to ArticleBot and must be present. If it is not, you must rerun Installation Step C. Is WinMySQLAdmin Running Properly? If you have just installed ArticleBot you must reboot your computer to start this program. So do that now if required. If after rebooting, you still do not have the Green Traffic Light in your tray, do the following to force MySQL to run when you start your computer. Click on the Start Button in the lower left of your screen and then select “Control Panel”. In the control panel select the Administrative Tools icon. In the list of administrative tools select “services”. If MySQL is installed, you will find “MySQL” in the list of services.
When MySQL is installed as a service and appears in the list of sevices check the following. In the “Status” column it should say “started” and in the “Startup Type” column it should say “Automatic”. If MySQL is not in the " list you will have to reinstall MySQL starting with ArticleBot Installation step B. If MySQL is there, but not started, right click on it and select "Properties" and then “Automatic” startup. Then reboot your computer to check that the Traffic Light Icon is present at the bottom of your screen and that the light is green. If it is still not there, run (double click) c:\mysql\bin\winmysqladmin.exe to turn on the Green Traffic Light manually. It will pop up momentarily and then drop to the Traffic Light icon very quickly. As soon as you see the Traffic Light icon, click on it and select "Show me" to get the window back. Look to see that winmysqladmin has a connection as in the illustration below. Note all of the gray text in the boxes, yours may be slightly different but the gray text should be in all text boxes as shown here.
NEVER click on the x in the upper right hand corner of winmysqladmin because it will close the server until you reboot or start it manually again. Just minimize the window. Check Your DSN Servers? 3. MySQL will not
install using ArticleBot's Installation Step B. If you are having trouble installing MySQL using the ArticleBot Installation Step B you can install it directly from http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/windows-installation.html. Be sure that you install mysql release 4.1 in the folder "c:\mysql\". Do not install MySQL in c:\program files\mysql\. Installing MySQL from http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/windows-installation.html replaces ArticleBot Installation Step B. You must still run Steps A and C. Be sure to do each step in the order A, B and then C. The MySQL URL above has much more information and help then we can offer from this page.
There is quite a lot of documentation for this error if you search Google for
the term: I couldn't get into the thread you suggested, it appears they were having server problems, but I did discover a quick remedy. By going to C:\windows\repair and copying autoexec.nt & config.nt into the c:\windows\system32 folder. If this does not solve your problem, try installing MySQL directly from http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/windows-installation.html. You must still run ArticleBot Installation Steps A and C. Be sure to do each step in the order A, B and then C. The MySQL URL above has much more information and help then we can offer from this page. 5. The Linkmap
building feature is not giving me any results. The most common reason for the linkmap feature not working is the lack of title tags in the output documents. Be sure that the output files contain a title tag in the first 10 lines of text and that the title tags are all lower case as in <title>My Title Text</title>. 6.
ArticleBot Error --- The process cannot access the file "C:\Program
Files\ArticleBot\tempSynFile.syn" because it is being used by another process. Are you running any automatic file backup untilities? These will hold an ArticleBot file open and not allow ArticleBot to reuse the file name. This is a common cause of the file in use error. The Google free download that does this has been reported to cause this problem. This error can also be caused by a bad Synonym file. To explain how you can cause this, I will give you an example. Say you have the following seed document with the project name of ‘Animals’. <title> $$OrideColor $$OrideAminals in $$OrideState </ttitle> Note that there are 4 occurrences of the word “seen” in the above seed document. Assume that you used the RED selection for all four occurrences of the word “seen”. ArticleBot will store your selected synonyms for each occurrence in the project folder as text based “.syn” files. If you opened Windows Explorer and looked at the folder ‘c:\program files\ArticleBot\projects\animals\’ you would see the files as shown below: seen-1.syn Note that they are named using the order they occurred in the seed document. This way you can select a separate list of synonyms for each occurrence and everything works out great. Now suppose you have this all finished with all terms selected and you decide at a later date to insert another occurrence of the word “seen” in the seed document. See the change below: <title> $$OrideColor $$OrideAminals in $$OrideState </ttitle> Now there are five occurrences of the word "seen" and ArticleBot will look at the first occurrence as occurrence number 1 and the old occurrence number 1 is now occurrence number 2. It does not make a difference if you select the new inserted term for replacement or not. ArticleBot keeps track of all words and their occurrence numbers. To correct this, you should remove all of your selections (red highlights) for the term ‘seen’ and redo them with the correct synonyms. If you do not do this, it is possible for ArticleBot to generate an error due to a bad (extra or missing seen-x.syn) synonym file. A good rule for new ArticleBot users, is to never edit a seed article above the selected terms. As you get more experienced and understand the above example, you will be able to edit any where, any time. Just be very aware of the above example and understand how ArticleBot tries to keep the occurrence numbers for each term constant. Note that when you select a term, ArticleBot shows you the term followed by
its occurrence number at the top of the page. 7. Some controls are
cut off or missing in the ArticleBot window. There are two thing that can cause this problem. A. ArticleBot is written for a minimum screen resolution of 1024 x 768. If you are attempting to run ArticleBot at 800 x 600 resolution or less, you will not be able to access all of the controls. To resolve this, right click on your desktop and select properties, then the settings tab. You can adjust your screen resolution to 1024 x 768 or larger there. B. Some graphic drivers allow you to adjust your dpi to larger than normal settings. When you do this, the controls become larger, more pixels are required, and you will need to set your screen resolution to something larger than 1024 x 768 to see all of the ArticleBot controls. ArticleBot will not work with a screen resolution set to 1024 x 768 if you have increased the dpi setting to larger than normal settings. 8. I get an error
saying file WWDevCom.dll is missing or not registered. WWDevCom.dll is a file in thesaurus plug in for ArticleBot and is included in the ArticleBot installation files. When you install ArticleBot this file should be in the installed directory which must be c:\program files\articlebot\. Below is a snapshot of the c:\program files\articlebot\ folder showing the installed component files. Note that WWDevCom.dll is in this list. Check your c:\program files\articlebot\ folder to be sure that this file is present.
In the image above, the files that comprise the thesaurus are highlighted with a faint gray background. Assuming WWDevCOM.dll is present in your folder, you can register the file by double clicking on regthes.bat. If the WWDevCOM.dll file is missing, please contact us at thebot@articlebot.com and tell us about the missing file or files. After adding the file you must always register it by running regthes.bat. If the ArticleBot installation Step C was successful, all of this was done automatically. 9. I am getting an error
that says the RPC server is not available. ArticleBot has opened Internet Explorer to show you results and you have manually closed the window. The next time Articlebot tries to display a result, it can't find Internet Explorer because you have manually closed it. If you minimize Internet Explorer instead of closing it you will not get this error. 10. I am not getting
any scrape results. Search for your term by hand at Google and see if you get any results. Are there any available? How many results did you ask for? Is there a zero in the number of results requested? There are a lot of options in scraping and there are combinations of entries that would return no results. Also, you will get no results if you have temporarily lost your internet connection during the scrape. These are a few things to look at. It is unusual to get no search results where Google has results available. Getting no results is however very common because Google does not have info on everything. 11. How can I
remove ArticleBot and all of its componenets from my computer? You can got to http://www.articlebot.com/members/install/articlebot-uninstall.php for instructions on removing ArticleBot and all of its componenets from your computer. 12. How do I back up my
projects? Your projects and related data are stored in three separate areas. You will need to copy all three separately to a backup location. This will also work to move your database and projects to another computer. The three items are: 1. The seed document is stored as a single .rtf file in the folder c:\program
files\articlebot\. It will have the same name as your project name followed
by a .rtf extension. If you move all three of these items to a second computer, you have effectively moved and/or backed up your project. 13. The Quick Use
(Blue) terms are not spinning properly. The Quick Use (blue) terms are triggered by the RTF (rich text format) prefix tags for the color blue and underline. If you do not strip out all RTF tags from your seed document before you begin a project, you will have unpredictable results. To see the RTF format for your seed document, go to "Tool" and then "Show Input Rich Text Format". The prefix or tag for blue and underline is "\cfx\ul\ " where x is an integer. If you have anything else in front of your term, the Quick Use feature will not work for that term. The best way handle this is to always click on "Tools" and then "Remove All Terms" as soon as you place your seed document in the input window. This will strip out all miscellaneous RTF formatting.
14. Startup
Error: Program Halted, a live internet connection is required to run ArticleBot. This error is usually caused by your fire wall not allowing ArticleBot to FTP download its permission file from the ArticleBot server. Check you fire wall or fire walls and be sure that ArticleBot and FTP transfers are not blocked. Some users have found that they have to reboot their computer to reconnect when this error occurs. 15. Error message:
Not Enough Quota Is Available To Process This Command? This is an issue of not enough memory. Close some applications and try again. If you still get this message, choose System from Control Panel, then choose Virtual Memory and increase the size of your paging file. For more information, go to http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/2000/server/reskit/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/Windows/2000/server/reskit/en-us/w2000Msgs/1495.asp.
16. Installation error
No CE signature found. This error is caused by a corrupt download file. Re download the installation file and try again. 17. ArticleBot Message
5 - Ending Program. Internet connect exception = System.Net.WebException: The
operation has timed-out. This can be caused by a bad internet connection. We had one user with this problem send us the following solution:
18. ArticleBot Message
3 - You are not yet licensed or the Articlebot site may be down. ArticleBot connects to a web server and checks your User Name, Password and Expiration Date before it will start the program. If you have entered a user name and password that does not exactly match your database records on the internet server, you will get a message 3 error. A message 3 error can also occur if the ArticleBot server is temporarily down. To correct this do the following.
19. How do you use the
ArticleBot Replace Tag? This is an Abot Tag that you can add around a section of text in your seed document
that will replace any characters with a replacement string. It has the format
An example is below: <abot replace>" ","+","$$OrideColor $$OrideAnimals in $$OrideState"</abot> The above line in your seed code will replace the spaces between the $$Oride terms with dashes. This feature was added in release 12xx which, as of this writing, is in a very limited Beta Test release.
20. The
"\" will note spin properly in my php code. <? $text_delim = "\n"; ?> <? $text_delim = "\"; ?> <? $text_delim = "<abot>backslash</abot>n"; ?> <? $text_delim = "<abot>backslash</abot>"; ?> There is a way around this starting in release 1214. The first two lines above will not work and the second two line will work. Note that the \ has been replaced with <abot>backslash</abot>. This will be replace properly in the final page's source text.
21. Missing file
"mscoree.exe" error. This is a problem with the Microsoft .Net Framework and/or a Virus Scan Program such as Norton Disk Doctor. It is possible that the .Net Framework is not installed on your computer. This is ArticleBot installation step A. I seached Yahoo for "mscoree.exe error" and found these links that have great information in them. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316091 http://www.uwm.edu/~bobtreat/messages/494.shtml http://www.windows98forum.org/ftopic4393_MSCOREE_dll.html 22. What
is available in the Pro Version that is not in regular ArticleBot? ArticleBot Pro has a new Scrape On the Fly feature and supports the new Spread
Sheet/Releational Data Base data entry.
23. How do I control
capitalization. Terms do not have a $$ in front of them take the case of the term. If the term is "happy" and the synonym is "Joy" the result will be "joy" because the term was not capitalized. If you use a $$ term the case comes from the database. For instance if you term is "$$happy" and the synonym is "Joy" the result will be "Joy" because joy was upper case in the database of synonyms. 24.
I have problems
with apostrophes. They don't spin correctly. Use ^ instaed of ' and ^^ instead of ". If you make these replacements in the synonyms in your database they will work properly. You must do this because MySQL uses the ' and " for control characters.
25. Hyphens don't work properly. Hyphens are not allowed in terms because they are used in the *.syn file names. You can read about this in question number 6 above.
26. Error:
Spin Aborted in Section Create\Projects\Temp directory. The problem is that you have edited the seed document after selecting terms to spin. This creates .syn files that do not match up with the terms you have chosen. Again, this is caused by editing the seed document after you have selected a few terms. ArticleBot is not a word processor and editing a document after you have selected the terms to spin can cause this error. You have two possible solutions. The first is to open a new project and put in a few words. Select just one word and spin the phrase. Read question number 6 above and learn how .syn files work. This is learning to walk before you run and you will then understand how to correct the larger project. The second option is to go to your project that is causing the errors and select "Tools" and the "Remove All Terms". This will clear all selected terms and their respective .syn files. Then re select each term without editing the seed document. Experienced ArticleBot users edit the seed document all the time but they have reached a level of confidence where they understand .syn files. See question number 6 above. They know how to edit a seed document and stay out of trouble. Officially we say that you should never edit a seed document after you select the first term. However, we know this is not what the users do. After you have generated a few successful projects you will find that editing the seed after you start selecting terms can be done if you understand .syn files. It is not for beginners. You have a locked file in c:\program files\articlebot\yourprojectname\temp\. Before you try any of the above you must manually delete all files in this folder. You can also delete the temp folder itself. 27.
MySQL Error: Access denied for user 'ODBC'@'localhost' (using password: NO) You may have already had MySQL installed on your computer with your own password and user name or you may have installed a new release of MySQL. There are two things you can try to correct the error. One solution is to tell ArticleBot what user name and password to use to open MySQL. In ArticleBot, go to the "Tools" menu item and select "settings". There, you can type in your MySQL user name and password. The default for older releases of MySQL and ArticleBot is to have a blank User Name and a blank Password. Try setting your User Name to 'root' and your Password blank. This will give ArticleBot administrative access to MySQL. A second solution is to give the user 'ODBC' (you) access to all tables in MySQL. Follow the steps below:
28. Installation error
'MDAC 2.8 RTM is incompatible with this version of Windows. All of its features
are currently part of Windows.' This is not really an error. It is a message saying you do not need to install the component because it is already installed. Just continue with the installation. 29. Can
I install ArticleBot and/or MySQL someplace besides the default locations on
drive "C:"? Due to the endless number of installation possibilities, we do not support the use of ArticleBot on any drive but C. If you know how to program DOS batch files, you can edit the installation batch files in c:\_abot. They can be changed to reroute the installation of ArticleBot and/or MySQL anywhere. The program will run fine on any hard drive once it is properly installed. Order Article Bot / Tutorials / don@articlebot.com
